How to Treat Dry Socket

How to Treat Dry Socket

If you’ve had any of your teeth removed you know how painful the recovery process can be. For days after your appointment, you have to be careful how you brush your teeth, chew, and even move your mouth to prevent unnecessary pain during the healing process.

Unfortunately, sometimes there are complications that make the healing process more complicated and painful. An example of this is dry socket.

Dry socket is a condition that can follow tooth extraction. When you have a tooth removed you are exposing gum and bone tissue which can lead to a variety of complications.

Normally, after a tooth is removed a blood clot is formed over the space which serves as a protective layer while the mouth heals. This prevents any food, air, and even foreign objects from entering the space and creating complications.

Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is removed or dislodged before the socket fully heals. Tobacco use, certain medications, carbonated beverages, and even brushing the treatment sight can cause this to occur.

Indicators of Dry Socket:

  • Severe pain in the area
  • Visible bone tissue
  • Radiating pain in the head
  • Bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth that does not improve with brushing
  • Discoloration around the socket

Dry Socket Treatment

While the condition is painful, the treatment process is relatively simple. In most cases, this condition does not require an additional trip to the dentist. By cleaning the wound, irrigating with saline solution, and covering the socket with gauze, you can expect the issue to clear up on its own.

If your case is especially painful, contact us for a treatment. The process will be very similar to the at home routine, but will allow the socket to heal faster and can be less uncomfortable. Dr. Aller, or one of her associates, will likely use soothing ointments that speed up healing and provide relief from discomfort.
