Toothbrush Bristles and Toothbrush Types – Who Needs What, and Why

select a toothbrush

You might not think about this when you go to the store to purchase a new tooth brush, some toothbrushes are better for your teeth than others. Determining the toothbrush that is best for you can depend on a number of factors which is why you should always consult your dentist.

Toothbrushes come with a variety of bristle hardness. Typically, these are soft, medium, or hard. While it may be tempting to choose a toothbrush with hard bristles to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly, this type can actually cause damage to your teeth and gums.

There are two main types of toothbrushes: manual and electric. Depending on which you choose you still have a number of features to consider.

Manual Toothbrush

The most common toothbrush is a manual toothbrush.

Bristle Hardness

Most people should use a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid damaging the teeth. A brush with hard bristles can be more effective at clearing away plaque, but it can cause damage to your gums and enamel.

Head Shape

Most toothbrushes are rounded or squared, but there are diamond shapes available which make it easier to reach the back of your molars.

Bristle Pattern

There are a number of bristle patterns available. There’s no right or wrong choice, you should simply choose the type that is most comfortable for you.

Handle Design

You should choose the type of handle that makes it easiest for you to brush your teeth. The available designs are straight, contra-angle, non-slip grip, and flexible.

Electric Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes are a popular choice if you want a deep, professional-like clean at home. These are more expensive than manual brushes but they may come with features such as timers to help you brush more effectively.

Rotating

This toothbrush rotates at a high speed so the best way to use it is to brush each tooth individually. These can make it easier to clean rear molars and hard to reach places because the brush head tends to be smaller than other toothbrushes.

Sonic

This type of toothbrush pulsates at a high speed producing a vertical brushing movement. You use this toothbrush the same way as you would use a manual toothbrush.

 Other Toothbrushes to Consider

 Inter-dental

This tool should be used in conjunction with toothbrushing to clean difficult to reach places such as around and between the wires of braces and tight spaces between your teeth.

Sulcabrush

This type of toothbrush is used to clean the gemlike adjacent to the teeth.

End-tuft

This brush is designed to reach deeper into small spaces. These are best for cleaning around orthodontic structures, wisdom teeth, crowded teeth, implants, bridges, dentures, and other appliances.

 Chewable

This is a disposable toothbrush that is best for traveling. Sometimes these are even available in bathroom vending machines. These come in different flavors so you don’t have to worry about bringing your favorite toothpaste with you. This is not an appropriate choice for a daily toothbrush.
