April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month!

april is oral cancer awareness month

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, oral cancer rates have increased by 15 percent as compared to the mid-1970s (according to last estimates).

Whereas, the American Cancer Society has estimated that in 2019, about 53,000 people are suspected to be affected by an oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. The organization also estimated that over 10,800 people may die due to the disease.

Needless to say, these statistics are alarming for anyone, especially older adults who are more at risk of oral cancer. It’s because the risk of oral cancer increases with age, where the chances to develop this disease are higher after age 50.

That is why the month of April is dedicated to oral cancer awareness.

Oral Cancer Awareness Speaks of Detecting Early Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

During the Oral Cancer Awareness Month, dentists all over the world urge people to understand the early symptoms of oral cancer and get screenings for timely detection of this disease.

Early detection of different types of oral cancers leads to early treatment, and that in turn increases your chances to obtain positive results and lead a healthier life.

Whether you live in different places near our offices in Florida, it is essential that you receive regular oral cancer screening. During these screening sessions, your dentist performs a check of your mouth for symptoms of oral cancer. In some cases, your dentist may also require additional tests or examinations to determine whether you have oral cancer or not.

This ensures that if you have started developing the symptoms of oral cancer, then they are detected before the disease deepens its roots. At Miracle Smile, you could ask for a dental screening anytime or have it done through one of your regular visits. During Oral Cancer Awareness Month, you could simply schedule an appointment to get oral cancer screening and ensure that if you need to take any steps for treatment, then you can do so without any delay.

Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Even if your last oral cancer screening went perfectly fine, it doesn’t mean you are immune to the disease. That is why it is important that you know about the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and reach out to a dentist accordingly.

Some of the common symptoms of oral cancer include:

• Pain in the mouth, ear, or even in your face.

• Trouble swallowing or experiencing pain when swallowing.

• Mouth sores or ulcers.

• Red and white plaques.

• Bad breath.

• Enlarged lymph nodes.

• Coughing.

If you notice these symptoms, then make sure to discuss them with your dentist as soon as you can. Some of these symptoms may be associated with other oral conditions such as gum disease, but that doesn’t that you shouldn’t pay attention to them.
