Don’t DIY your Invisalign – Here’s Why

A beautiful smile is what everybody wants, and many do want it quickly with minimal visits to the dentist. We understand! However, at Miracle Smile we encourage you to commit to your smile, and seek proper dental care throughout your Invisalign procedure.

What is Invisalign?

Invisaligns are orthodontic devices which are thin, transparent, removable, physically invisible plastic aligners used for successful correction of the teeth position. This technique of aligning teeth is simple, brackets less, durable, esthetic and comfortable for the people. It’s popularity rises year after year, and we see hundreds of Invisalign patients in both of our offices.

Invisalign is Not Always the Right Choice

Invisalign can only be used for alignment of teeth after consultation with your cosmetic dentist. Not every patient is the right candidate for it, and it also cannot fix orthodontic issues such as severe jaw issues and severe malocclusion.

They are also not well suited for use in very young patients, who’s jaws have not yet finished changing. Invisalign also shouldn’t be used in people with poor periodontal health. Therefore, it is very important to seek treatment in person, with periodic supervision which befits the need of each patient. A dentist who doesn’t see you, cannot help you. That’s why Dr. Aller supervises all dental alignment cases.

Unsupervised Invisalign Alternatives like Smile Direct

Although treatment with Invisalign should only happen under proper consultation, evaluation and under strict supervision of a cosmetic dentist, people are not listening. There are various companies in the market such as smile direct club, which are selling an Invisalign-like product and promoting it as a cheaper alternative. These companies do not have your dental health on their minds.

These aligners are usually dispatched by these companies through the mail. A home impression kit is sent to you in order to make impressions of the teeth, completely on your own. This means there is no dentist to see if you’ve taken it correctly. If done wrong, the fabrication of the aligners will be incorrect as well – potentially leading to aligners that do not fit correctly.

Conversely, at Miracle Smile and other certified Invisalign providers, we are trained on taking a precise 3D scan of your teeth. Unsupervised dental patients often have problems such as:

  1. Ill fabricated aligners that traumatize cheek, gums and tongue.
  2. Overall poor gingival health and periodontitis.
  3. Too fast tooth movement can cause significant bone resorption and teeth becomes mobile.
  4. Multiple caries
  5. Difficulty in closing and opening the mouth
  6. Difficulty in chewing and many more

We’ve discussed this issue before, and hope you’ll consider the potential impact before choosing unsupervised dental aligners.Learn more here:

Although it may appear economic, we implore our patients to do their research. Poor-fitting aligners can worsen the overall condition of your mouth, and cause greater expenses long-term. If cost is an issue, we offer several payment plans and credit options that can assist – but it is important to us that your smile stays healthy!
